Green tea’s property of burning calories is theoretically due to its containing epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG, which is a type of flavonol that can increase the body’s heat production by increasing its metabolism. Whereas fermented leaves are used to brew dark tea, green tea is produced by steaming fresh leaves which results in a higher concentration of polyphenols, one of which is EGCG.
Due to EGCG’s ability to increase metabolism, green tea can increase your body’s ability to burn calories whilst you are engaging in regular activities. This boost in metabolism and subsequent increase in the burning of calories is the quality that causes you to lose more weight than you would had not been drinking green tea.

The general consensus as to how many cups of green tea you should drink should you want to lose weight is around three to five. Obviously, the exactly amount varies, but drinking too much is unlikely to be a problem, whereas drinking too little may reduce the weight loss that should come as a result.

However you must bear in mind that green tea does contain caffeine, which could be a problem depending on your own medical status. If this is a problem, you can take green tea extract, which is made from decaffeinated green tea so you can benefit from the weight loss without having to ingest caffeine if it is a problem for you. You can also take green tea pills or green tea patches should you prefer those methods of application.

Green tea is available as either loose green tea leaves or in a tea bag, much the same as regular tea. You can also get green tea in the form of green tea extract or powdered green tea. Always be careful and do a little research into green tea brands before purchasing so you know which brands you should be looking out for and which brands you should be avoiding. As always, more money tends to equal more quality and quality is most certainly of great importance when it comes to subjects such as this.

It is important that you bear in mind that drinking green tea alone will not result in weight loss. You also need to eat healthily and exercise regularly if you really want to lose the weight. A certain commitment is always required when losing weight; green tea can simply increase the rate at which you lose the weight. It’s still up to you to keep the weight off.
